MUAY THAI / JOURNAL
Your first time at the gym. Start with good questions.
What to find out before your first visit and what to ask the coach. A practical starting point without unnecessary expectations.

Your first visit to a gym starts with a simple conversation. You do not need to know the names of the techniques or arrive with a professional fighter’s equipment. It helps to know where you are going, who will welcome you and what the session will involve.
Send a message or call first
Tell your chosen gym that this will be your first Muay Thai session. Ask about a beginners’ group and confirm the time. The gym itself can give you up-to-date information.
- Do I need to book a place in advance?
- How long is the session, and how much does it cost?
- What should I bring, and what can I borrow?
- When should I arrive, and who should I speak to?
Choose equipment after talking to the gym
Speak to the coach before making a big purchase. Policies on borrowing gloves and requirements for other protective equipment vary. For your first visit, prepare comfortable sportswear, a towel and water; confirm the specific equipment you will need with the gym.
Give yourself time to settle in
Arrive a little early, introduce yourself to the coach and remind them that you are a beginner. Listen to the instructions and ask when something is unclear. Discuss the pace and any contact with a partner in advance, according to the level of the class.
Your first session is an introduction to a new environment. It does not have to be a test of what you already know.
Leave with a clear next step
Before you leave, ask about the next suitable session. Notice whether you feel comfortable asking questions, understand the instructions and like the way the class is taught. That will help you decide whether you want to return.
